Chincoteagues In Canada

About Chincoteague and Assateague Island

Chincoteague Island is a quaint seaside town on the Eastern Shore of Virginia. It's year-round population is about 4,500. In the summertime, the population soars to about 50,000 locals and visitors. The town is best known for it's seafood, and Chincoteague Ponies.

The neighbouring island of Assateague is home to one of the most beautiful beaches, and the wild herd of Chincoteague Ponies.

Pony Penning

Every July the ponies are rounded up by the "Saltwater Cowboys", and swim the channel over to Chincoteague Island. There, most of the foals are sold by auction in order to maintain the herd count under 150 ponies. The Saltwater Cowboys are made up of Volunteer Firefighters, who look after the pony herd year-round.
